"Com si la terra respirés". Una lectura ecocrítica de "La mort i la primavera"

Abstract

Aquest article proposa una interpretació del medi natural a La mort i la primavera des d'una perspectiva ecocrítica. A la seva novel·la pòstuma, Rodoreda no només s'hi inventa un poble primitiu amb rituals i costums atàvics, sinó que imagina també tot un ecosistema. Mitjançant una lectura atenta del text, analitzaré com el medi natural participa de la dialèctica entre mort i renaixement, abjecció i bellesa, que recorre tota la trama de la novel·la. D'una banda, faré notar el paral·lelisme entre els rituals d’opressió de la comunitat i la morfologia del paisatge –que en tant que gran cos natural duplica la crueltat infringida als cossos individuals que l’habiten. D'altra banda, demostraré que l'obra transmet una sensibilitat ecològica que es palpa en la interacció del protagonista amb l'alteritat no-humana i en la seva descripció de la veu de la terra com un batec xifrat o un sospir inintel·ligible que es resisteix a la ideologia assassina dels vilatans.

Abstract

This article proposes an interpretation of the natural environment in La mort i la primavera [Death in Spring] from an ecocritical perspective. In her posthumous novel, Rodoreda not only invents a primitive village with atavistic rituals and customs, but also imagines an entire ecosystem. Through a careful reading of the text, I will analyze how the natural environment participates in the dialectic between death and rebirth, beauty and abjection, which runs through the entire plot of the novel. On the one hand, I will note the parallels between the community’s oppressive rituals and the morphology of the landscape —which as a large natural body amplifies the cruelty inflicted on the individual bodies that inhabit it. On the other hand, I will demonstrate that the novel transmits an ecological sensibility that can be felt in the protagonist’s interaction with non-human otherness and in his description of earth’s voice as a coded heartbeat or an unintelligible sigh who resists the murderous ideology of the villagers. Finally, I will address the extent to which Rodoreda’s posthumous fiction anticipates the way in which we have already begun to experience nature in times of climate change: with a sinister feeling
